Introducing the Urbs Indis Library + Upcoming Talk

Dear friends,

It’s been a while since I’ve written to you, and a lot has happened since the release of Bombay Imagined.

Let me catch you up:

In May 2023, after 15 wonderful years in Mumbai, we relocated to Bangalore and took the petrifying leap of starting a small architecture studio. Petrifying. But here we are. Our first project? The @urbsindislibrary. It’s our family home, our studio, and the Urbs Indis Library – all in 1,900 sq. ft. A space that functions as a home, a creative workspace, and a public library all in one.

We moved in on 2 September 2024, and since then, we’ve hosted 10 walkthroughs with about 250 visitors. That’s 250 people who share our excitement for cities, stories, and a space where they converge. We feel deeply honored and look forward to hosting more walkthroughs in 2025. If the New Year brings you to Bangalore and you would like to visit, please let us know.

For those curious, I’ve been sharing daily mini-stories about the space (and its making) on Instagram (@urbsindislibrary), and for email lovers, you can subscribe to our Substack to receive these stories directly in your inbox every day (thanks to my wife, @tinanandiphoto).

Like the space itself, these stories offer small windows into the magic that brings it all together: architecture, books, people, and humor (well, at least 16% funny, according to recent walkthrough audiences).

Tomorrow, I will be giving my first public talk about the Urbs Indis Library and Garden at IIHS. Here are the details:

A Living Archive: Introducing the Urbs Indis Library
Date: Thursday, 19 December 2024
Time: 6:30 PM IST
Location: IIHS City Campus, Bengaluru (also available on Zoom)

You can register for the talk here: https://cityscripts.iihs.co.in/

We hope to see you there (either in-person or online) – to listen, share, and maybe laugh (at least twice) as we celebrate this new chapter together.

With smiles and all good wishes,

Robert

Dear Reader, Today (2 September 2025) the Urbs Indis Library and Garden turns one year old (and I, Robert, turn 41). Which means the space was completed the day I turned 40. In architect-years that is like being a toddler. As we slowly find our feet, here are three highlights from the last year of living with a space that constantly surprises us: 1. Walkthroughs Tina, Kai and I have absolutely loved opening up our home, studio and library, and walking through it with others. Since September...
