Dear Reader, Good Morning. On Sunday 7 December we will host the Bombay Imagined second edition book launch at the Urbs Indis Library. If you are in Bangalore, please consider joining us! The afternoon will begin at 12 noon with an informal meet and greet and a book signing, followed by an interactive Walkthrough at 3 pm. This Walkthrough will be the first that directly explores the links between Mumbai’s unbuilt past, and the built present that is our home I studio I library in Krishnappa Garden, Bangalore. We are very excited about this new experience, and to understand why I need to share a bit of the backstory…. Earlier this year, Ruturaj Parikh of Matter called and asked if I would be open to speaking at the Frame Conclave in Goa. The theme of the conference was “To Draw.” Over the months that followed, I crafted a presentation that connected my earliest experiences of focused blind contour drawing, in high school, to speculation sketches for Bombay Imagined during the Pandemic, and then closed with more recent architectural drawings. As the presentation evolved, I slowly discovered that many ideas embedded in Bombay’s unrealised past have quietly, and in their own unique way, found expression at the Urbs Indis Library in Bangalore. With trembling, as always, I shared these thoughts in Goa, and after the conference Ruturaj Parikh sent me the following note: “Your presentation bridged an enormous conceptual gap between the city and the residence, and for us, made it possible to imagine the potential of ideas at two completely independent and opposite scales.” And just like that, a new world opened in my mind. A world in which architecture and writing, buildings and books, are not separate, but are complementary creative pursuits that enrich one another. The Bombay Imagined second edition launch at the Urbs Indis Library will attempt to extend this revelation into the flesh as an interactive Walkthrough. We hop you can make it! Register here. Incase you are not able to make it for the launch, we hope to see you at a book-related event, or a Walkthrough soon: Sunday 7 December: Book Launch and Walkthrough at UIL, Bangalore Feel free to get in touch if you would like to organize a talk in your town / space! Dear Reader, Today (2 September 2025) the Urbs Indis Library and Garden turns one year old (and I, Robert, turn 41). Which means the space was completed the day I turned 40. In architect-years that is like being a toddler. As we slowly find our feet, here are three highlights from the last year of living with a space that constantly surprises us: 1. Walkthroughs Tina, Kai and I have absolutely loved opening up our home, studio and library, and walking through it with others. Since September...
Dear friends,It’s been a while since I’ve written to you, and a lot has happened since the release of Bombay Imagined. Let me catch you up: In May 2023, after 15 wonderful years in Mumbai, we relocated to Bangalore and took the petrifying leap of starting a small architecture studio. Petrifying. But here we are. Our first project? The @urbsindislibrary. It’s our family home, our studio, and the Urbs Indis Library – all in 1,900 sq. ft. A space that functions as a home, a creative workspace,...
